I am starting new with clustering and will be deploying a new 2012 windows failover cluster with a SQL 2012 SP1 installation.

I am provision disks iSCSI and want to know if once the target in configured and the disks are visible to both hosts (not configured) do I bring online,  initialise and create volume on the disks on one server only or do it on both (it is the same disk so why would I do it twice) Please help confused sysadmin..

Question about dynamic witness with Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi folks,

Happy new year first :-)

I just have a question concerning the new behavior of the witness provided by Windows Server 2012 R2.

According to the Microsoft documentation I can read: The quorum witness vote is also dynamically adjusted based on the state of the witness resource. If the witness is offfline or failed, the cluster sets the witness vote to "0".

However in my lab environment (a WSFC with two nodes and a fileshare witness) I noticed that if the FSW is in failed state, the property WitnessDynamicWeight is still equal to 1. From my understanding this value would be changed to 0 in this case.

Name       State       NodeWeight      DynamicWeight

Node1      Up                          1                            1

Node2      Up                          1                            1

Name       DynamicQuorum     WitnessDynamicWeight

winclust                          1                                     1

If I try to shutdown one of my cluster node, the quorum is lost my case

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I have SQL 2012 SP2 service on 2 FC nodes of 2012 R2 servers. Everything were working fine about a year, but now my first Node got mixed up with updates and it is offline now. Problem is, that second Node cannot start SQL services By its own.

I checked/tried:

- I checked, that other services related to SQL are online.
- I chenged Node´s ownership to SQL service
- Cluster name has full Access rights to OU where all Computer record of this service are in place

The error I get:

0x800713cf:The cluster resource cannot be brought online. The owner node cannot run this resource.

File Share Witness

I have a 2 node cluster utilizing Node and File Share Majority as quorum. Our file share witness has been in a failed state for over three weeks and we cannot get it back online. Permissions on the file share appear to be good and so does DNS. From either node I can see and write to the share but for some reason it remains failed. What are my options, can I create an additional FSW and mark the failed one offline. How should I proceed? Thanks in advance

Failover Cluster in a box

Hi,

I'm in the process of building a test environment which requires a failover cluster for a SQL Server Always on configuration of 2 DB nodes. I have a single Windows 2012 R2 host server with Hyper-V installed and my guest OS's configured using local storage on this server.

In order to create the guest failover cluster, I need to create a Quorum drive - which needs to be shared between the two DB nodes. Using only this physical host server and it's local storage, is this possible to achieve?

I believe that options for creating a shared VHDX disc are to host it on a CSV or a Scale out file server, but both of these seem to require the creation of a cluster themselves, which will require a Quorum disc on shared storage itself!

Thanks,

David

I have a 5 node cluster with a shared clustered disk connect to a dell equalogic ps4000i.  I was doing maintenance on one of the nodes (node 3), which happened to be the node owner of the clustered shared volume.  I manually did a live migration of all the virtual machines one at a time.  Once completed, I selected Pause and then the option to drain the roles to move the clustered shared volume to another server.

While this was in progress, I noticed that all of the virtual machines started to go offline.  the failover cluster manager showed that the ownership has moved to node 1.  when I checked the status of node 1, the clustered disk was showing online (no access).any thoughts?  It took me about 15 minutes to get things back up but I had to manually move it to another node before it connected in successfully

My cluster logs are very similar to the above thread... was it ever addressed?

[SV] Already protecting connection with message security level 'sign'

[FTI] Stream already exists to node: false

[Channel IP to another cluster node member] Close()

GracefuleClose(1226) because of channel to remote endpoint another cluster node~ is closed

Cluster services stops and generates:

The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server serverName$. The target name used wasserverName. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client. This can occur when the target server principal name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using. Ensure that the target SPN is only registered on the account used by the server.

I have implementing 3 node cluster using Windows server 2012 r2 hyper-v environment, Scenario as below....

3 HP server, every server 4 NIC`s, i made team using 4 NIC`s, and Cisco switch port configured as ether-channel and trunk port.

cluster up and running across all node, suddenly i have faced that i can`t access VM when its not on the same node from where i am accessing Cluster manager. but i can access that VM only if i log on that owned node via cluster manager.\

Please help.

HYPER-V 2012r2 VM's random lose connection with network teaming

$

The hardware:

We have an 8 node cluster hyper-v 2012r2, All servers are the same, Dell PowerEdge 630
with 4 integrated NIC's 2x10 GB and 2x1GB (BCM57800).
They have also a converged network adapter(BCM57810) with 2x10GB ports and we use NPAR to devide it in 8 Nic's

So the Nic’s are configured like this:

Two on-board nic’s 1 GB are disabled

Two on-board nic’s 10 GB are in a team and used for the Host (NODE_NIC1 + NODE_NIC2 = NODE_TEAM)
Teaming mode LACP, Dynamic, all active, vlan default

VM_TEAM
Two NPAR nic’s (shared) 10 GB are in a team for VM_lan (VM_NIC1 + vm_NIC2 = vm_TEAM)
Teaming mode Switch independent, Dynamic, all active, vlan default

X_TEAM
Two NPAR nics (shared) 10 GB are in a team for VM_lan (X_NIC1 + X_NIC2 = X_TEAM)
Teaming mode Switch independent, Dynamic, all active, vlan default

Y_TEAM
Two NPAR nics (shared) 10 GB are in a team for VM_lan (y_NIC1 + y_NIC2 = y_TEAM)
Teaming mode Switch independent, Dynamic, all active, vlan default

One NPAR nics (shared) 10 GB -> iscsi_nic1 no teaming -> only virtual switch
One NPAR nics (shared) 10 GB -> iscsi_nic2 no teaming -> only virtual switch

The problem:

Virtual machines are running fine and suddenly they lose connection, it happens with all the teams except the Node_team.
We can reproduce it by moving the VM's around the cluster. If we disable or standby one adapter in the team, the problem is gone.

We have read a lot about VMQ, and we believe also that we hit something like that, but we cannot create the perfect solution.
And we would like to use the above configuration, as a workaround we use a active/standby nic in the team.

Any suggestions?

Regards Perry

I will deploy 6 nodes Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster then I will deploy two-nodes SQL 2012 cluster hosted on this Hyper-V cluster, anyone have a guide for the two-nodes sql cluster impelemntation on Hyper-V cluster?

Note:  will deploy VMM 2012 installed as a VM on the hyper-v cluster as well.

NLB cluster fails with second node

I am trying to create a two-node NLB cluster for Exchange 2013 CAS and it just will not work. The two servers are VMs running on VMWare 5.x, two NICs using VMXNET 3 adapters.  When I first create the cluster, I can connect to OWA using the node1 NLB NIC and to the cluster's virtual IP.  As soon as I add node2, I can no longer connect OWA using the cluster's virtual IP, nor  the NLB NIC on node2, and node2 will not respond to pings, but  I can still connect to OWA using the NLB NIC on node1.

If I remove either node everything will start working.  I can connect to OWA using both nodes' NLB NIC and the cluster virtual IP address, and node2 still start responding to pings.

I don't see any errors in the event logs and both servers continue to listen on all ports when they are part of the cluster.  Firewalls have been turned off on both nodes.

What happens when a cluster fails?

Mainly I have worked in places that run Oracle and not heavy Windows SQL shops.  Currently, I work at a place that is Windows SQL dependent.  Which means a few clusters that I haven't really needed to worry about.

Ran into an issue yesterday where the cluster name dropped, but the two nodes stayed up.  Ran Cluster validation and brought the cluster back online.

Checking the event logs on the node that "owned?" the data.  Box2 I saw the following

4:45:45PM - WinRM service successfully processed an address change notification

4:45:45PM - Critical 1135 Failover Clustering.  Cluster node Box1 was removed from active failover cluster membership

4:45:50 - System detected address conflict for IP address 192.168.100.10 (this is IP of Cluster node.

I guess what I am looking for, does anyone have detailed information on what happens during a cluster fail.

Is the above normal?

NIC Teaming - Host unmanageable

$

I have just installed Server 2012 Datacenter edition with 4 NICs. I setup HyperV and was thinking of setting up NIC teaming for the VMs, but whenever I launch the NIC teaming option from Server Manager I get the right server listed, but it is listed as Host Unmanageable.

Am I missing a feature or something like NLB? I tried installing that and it also didnt work after that.
