Add-VMHardDiskDrive anomaly

$

I am building a PowerShell script to build out a SQL cluster comprised of VMs.  I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster with shared FC.  Everything is working fine on it.  But I ran into a strange occurrence with the Add-VMHardDiskDrive cmdlet.  It appears that it only works 'cleanly' on the node that owns the cluster name.  Here is a screen shot.

The first time I issued the command, the cluster name was owned by a different node in the Hyper-V cluster.  The second time I issued the command, the cluster name was owned by the same node on which I was executing the command.  That's the only difference.

The other interesting thing about this is that even though I am receiving the warning and error, the VHDX file is properly added to the VM.  So before I changed the ownership of the cluster group, I removed the VHDX file from the VM so that it would start at the same place on the VM.

I am running this from a Windows 8.1 VM that has all the latest patches and RSAT tools.  The 2012 R2 cluster nodes are all up to date on published patches.  The VMs are all 2012 R2 VMs.

Is this expected behavior?

So i want to konw do these settings need restart windows failover cluster core resource group to take effect?

OS version: WS2012 Std

Cluster type: CSV

Total num of Node: 2

Total of LUN's: 6 (MBR)

Connector type: FC

Number of VMs: 11

Enable MPIO: Yes

Server model: HP ProLiant DL980 G7

Antivirus: N/A

======================================================================

Hi everyone recently I setup Windows Hyper-V 2012 with CSV. I configured my Hyper-V with Live migration setting. For the LUNs I configured as below:

LUN1: 500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN2:500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN3:500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN4:500GB / 2VMs / WS2008 R2

LUN5:500GB / 3VMs / WS2012 Std

LUN6: 10GB / Quorum

My problem is, when the CSV complete to add storage to CSV, I realize in the Node 2 under C:\ClusterStorage\Volume, one of volume appeared as folder but the rest volume look likes okay (directories icon). When I tried to access that volume3 at Node 2 the message appear I don't have permission to access volume3.

Node 1

-Volume1 /(directories icon)

-Voleme2 /(directories icon)

-Volume3 / (directories icon)

-Volume4 /(directories icon)

-Volume5 /(directories icon)

=====================================================================

Node 2

-Volume1 /(directories icon)

-Voleme2 /(directories icon)

-Volume3 / (Folder icon) -Weird!!

-Volume4 /(directories icon)

-Volume5 /(directories icon)

When I performed Live migrations for both node only Volume3 got problem migrate to one node to another node. (VMs under volume3 unable to start)

Appreciated to all expert to answer my concern.

i am getting a lot of request time outs when pinging the cluster ip address on my 2 node cluster. But when i do continuous ping on the server ip address itself, it seems to be ok. The timeout seems to be happening only when pining the cluster ip. any idea?

I created a new cluster ip on the same cluster and pining it seems to be fine.

The problem with the other ip is a sql cluster ip

any idea?

1 MSMQ service published with an IP.
The VIP of the cluster continues with normal access.

How to connect to 2008R2 Failover Cluster using W8 RSAT Failover Cluster Manager

$

Can anyone please advise on how to do this or if it is not possible?   I am running W8 on my laptop and I need to have the ability to remotely manage my 2008R2 clusters.  I have this tool because we have also begun converting our lower level environments to server 2012.  I am getting the following error message:

The cluster to which you are attempting to connect is not a version of the cluster supported by this version of Failover Cluster Manager.

Any thoughts?

Error: The computer is joined to cluster when creating the Cluster

Hello Guys,

I have created a cluster to configure Hyper-V for 2 Nods, everything was greate and works perfectly, next day the storage hang and the cluster didn't work any more, I have destroyed the cluster the removed the cluster feature from both nods, deleted the cluster-computer from AD and the deleted the storage. after we fixed the storage, I have reconnect the storage, installed the cluster service on both nods, then I have validate the configuration and I had everything green 100%.

while creating the cluster, I faced an issue Unable "to successfully cleanup" I kept trying and removed the anti-virus, restarted the servers manytime, then I ended up to have another error, direclty when I add the server name on the creat cluster wizard, its telling me that the computer I'm adding is joined to cluster.

I think I need to do some cleaning to the previous cluster, can I have some help here ?

Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter

I have read the following blog about Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter and have few questions.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2009/02/13/what-is-a-microsoft-failover-cluster-virtual-adapter-anyway.asp

How does this adapter choose the IP address?  It seems that it is using 169.254 subnet address.

Can the IP address changed? If yes, how to change it in Windows 2008 R2?

What tool is used to show the kernel drivers?  The blog shows a screenshot below the sentence The Cluster network driver (netft.sys) is a kernel mode driver and is started and stopped by the Cluster Service.

If the physical NIC which has the same MAC address of the adapter is disabled, will that cause problem?

Thanks.

Scale Out File Servers for IIS .NET Data

$

Hello,

I am having a difficult time finding a direct answer online about whether or not my specific scenario warrants the use of an SOFS cluster, or just a traditional File Server cluster.

SCENARIO:

  • Roughly 30 Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Web servers running IIS 8.X
  • Approximately 600 websites all running ASP.NET 4.0 applications
  • Each website requires 5 different Virtual Directories.
  • Each Website is actually a radio station, and their content is very heavy on streaming media, pictures, and dynamic live content including streaming live radio broadcasts.
  • The Cluster is connected to a SAN via 8Gbps redundant (MPIO) Fiber Channel for the source of shared storage
  • We have 3 physical hosts in the Windows cluster that will accommodate either the SOFS or the traditional File Server

So basically here's my quandary.  I've set this up a number of times, and never got it to a point where I could put any sort of load on the platform to see a difference.  I fully grasp the concepts of both, but the problem is, I see very little documentation out there regarding others using SOFS technology for IIS Virtual Directories.  I do see that there are posts stating that it's actually part of it's core function aside from Hyper-V and SQL as well.

So, anyone out there using this in a real world scenario?  Any recommendations on whether I should or should NOT be deploying an SOFS based on the information above?  If yes, or no, then why in either direction?

I'm really looking to put a nail in the coffin on this question.  I actually have an advisory case opened up right now too, and even the first guy I talked to couldn't answer the question.  He said he'd have to get back to me.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!  Have a good one!

Unable to delete the files from CSV volumes on HyperV Cluster

Hello There,

I have a HyperV failover cluster with CSV Volumes recently i moved some of the VMs to another cluster.

VMs are moved but i still have the VM files on the CSV volumes which are occupying the disk space i tried to delete the VHD files / VM folders which are moved but it doesn't delete the files, please suggest.

This file when i browse it from  a server and delete the file it disappears but when i revisit the folder i find the files still on the disk, i did try to delete the files directly from the server through command line as it is running server core.

Cluster with LSI Syncro CS 9286-8e controller

Hello!

Please excuse me for asking this question here, but I can't ask LSI as I havn't got any LSI adapter yet.

I'm trying to choose the best DAS storage/controller for the two-node Win2012R2 cluster and now I'm poring over the docs on  LSI Syncro CS 9286-8e controller.  One of those documents (Syncro CS 9286-8e Solution User Guide) makes me feel I'm missing something important...because I can't assume LSI can make such blunders.

Maybe some one can tell me how can I "install a software drivers FIRST, BEFORE you install the operating system"?

The aforementioned MegaRAID SAS Device Driver Installation User Guide says "...press F6..." or click "Load Driver link...":

???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Unable to create cluster, hangs on forming cluster

Hi all,

I am trying to create a 2 node cluster on two x64 Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition servers. I am running the setup from the failover cluster MMC and it seems to run ok right up to the point where the snap-in says creating cluster. Then it seems to hang on "forming cluster" and a message pops up saying "The operation is taking longer than expected". A counter comes up and when it hits 2 minutes the wizard cancels and another message comes up "Unable to sucessfully cleanup".

The validation runs successfully before I start trying to create the cluster. The hardware involved is a HP EVA 6000, two Dell 2950's

I have included the report generated by the create cluster wizard below and the error from the event log on one of the machines (the error is the same on both machines).

Is there anything I can do to give me a better indication of what is happening, so I can resolve this issue or does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance.

Anthony

Problems live migrating some VMs between nodes - 2012 R2 Cluster

$

Today we migrated from a old 2008 R2 cluster to a new 2012 R2 cluster, we are having problems with live migration of selected VMs between the 2 nodes currently in the cluster.

When we attempt this we see the following error in failover cluster manager

Live migration of 'SCVMM RC-LYNC-MON' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'RC-LYNC-MON' failed at migration source 'RC-HYPERV-4'. (Virtual machine ID D3E6F2DF-A25B-459B-944D-A35979963B92)

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'RC-HYPERV-5': General access denied error (0x80070005).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration because the destination host rejected the request: General access denied error (0x80070005).

the following in the is seen on the destination node:

The Virtual Machine Management Service denied a request for a Virtual Machine migration at the destination host: General access denied error (0x80070005).

The Virtual Machine Management Service blocked a connection request for a Virtual Machine migration from client address '192.168.4.6': General access denied error (0x80070005).

I've read things about permissions but am unsure what exactly I am looking at and where I should be looking.

For example, the ACL on this folder C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\RC-LYNC-MON\Virtual Machines\D3E6F2DF-A25B-459B-944D-A35979963B92 is missing RC-HYPERV-5$ as an entry.  Other VMs that are migrating fine have this entry.

All VMs reside on a CSV, but I don't want to go altering permissions in case I make the situation worse!

Can anybody suggest some things to try?

How many network adapters and different subnets are needed for Windows 2008 R2 2-node cluster?

For Windows 2008 R2 2-node (active/passive) cluster using FC HBA instead of iSCSI, how many network adapters and different subnets are needed so there will be no warning about network in Failover Cluster Validation Report?

Does it just need 1 for Public network/Cluster communication, 1 for Cluster communication, 1 for Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter?

CSV iSCSI LUN slower than iSCSI LUN on same netapp filer

First time for me playing with CSV and Windows Server 2012 R2. (Looking Forward to use SMB 3 and CSV Cache for hyper-v)

Old productive using iscsi luns as vhdx/vhd storage from each hyper-v host.

Question for Performance Issue / degredation:

Using the same test netapp filer with 2 iscsi luns and testing Connection Speed with one host:

Using the CSV Share connected to iscsi lun shows 240 MB /s transfer Speed (copy iso file), using only one single iscsi lun is showing our exptected 560 MB/s.

All tests on same Hardware hosts (3 x HP DL380p gen8) and to same netapp filer. (all 10Gbit and new Hardware)

Testing csv Speed using iscsi lun compared to iscsi lun without csv?
