Node in cluster - status changes to "paused"

$

We have seven Windows 2012 R2 nodes in a Hyper-V cluster. They are all identical hardware (HP BladeSystem). For a while, we had only six nodes, and there were no problems.

Recently, we added the seventh node, and the status keeps reverting to "paused". I can't find any errors that directly point to why this is happening - either in the System or Application log of the server, in the various FailoverClustering logs, or in the Cluster Event logs. I created a cluster.log using the get-clusterlog command, but if it explains why this is happening, I can't figure it out (it's also a very large file - 150 MB, so it's difficult to determine what lines are the important ones).

As far as I can tell, everything on this new node is the same as the previous ones - the software versions, network settings, etc. The Cluster Validation report also doesn't give me anything helpful.

Any ideas on how to go about investigating this? Even before I can solve the problem, I'd like to at least know when and why the status reverts to paused.

Thanks,

David

removed storage pool from cluster, still present in Server Manager

Hi,

I just removed a storage pool from my clustered resources with remove-clusterresource and I can't find it in get-clusterresource anymore. Why is it still showing in server manager under Clusterd Storage Spaces? Did I forget to remove something?

PS C:\Users\admin> get-clusterresource -cluster ctr-bx-store-2

++ Missing IP under Clustername in Server Manager ++

Hello,

we have a Hyper-V Cluster with two nodes Server 2012R2. So far everything is working fine. Now I found out that not all IP adresses are shown in the server manager.

Host1 VMS01:
10.10.10.11 (local LAN access)
172.16.1.11 (LM)

Host1 VMS02:
10.10.10.12 (local LAN access)
172.16.1.12 (LM)

Cluster IP: 10.10.10.10

I do not understand why:
- The cluster ip is not shown under vms02
- IP address of vms02 is not shown under vmscl

Thanks in advance for some ideas

Jens

Windows 2012 R2 - Fileserver cluster file indexing

Hi

Is it possible to setup file indexing/windows search on a Windows 2012 R2 fileserver cluster? Is it cluster aware?

I have read some old posts that indexing is not cluster aware. Not sure if that is relevant still.

This doc descripbes a way, but this is also old ...

Anyone that knows or have done it successfully?

Trying to set up a windows 2016 server Cluster Server to replicate with a file Server.

This a the setup:
Primary site:
- 2 DFS
- 1 Cluster, 2 nodes, set with CVS storage

Secondary Site (DR)
- 1 DFS
- 1 File Server

The goal : I want to replication from the Cluster/File server from the primary site the secondary.

Want I add the folder to replicate, I add this message :

"The volume file system cannot be determined the netword name cannot be found"

hyperV vs. Cluster startup delay

$

In hyperv there is a setting for autostart delay of a guest. In Cluster, there is no such option, only priority low, medium, high. This results in some servers starting earlier than they should (e.g. before AD controller is ready or before SQL is ready) and subsequent failure of services that depend on e.g. database. How do I resolve this? How can I control startup of servers properly (that is by time not some obsure priorities) under cluster environment?

Unable to connect to Failover cluster manager in Windows server 2016

Hi,

I have a 2 node cluster in my environment which I used to be able to manage from Failover cluster manager. However, I am getting an error"The operation has failed. The following is a list of nodes that encountered this problem when the connection to the cluster was attempted:The remote node". Both nodes are in the same network segment and no local firewall is blocking.

I have seen the URL from below.

1) https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/clustering/2010/11/23/trouble-connecting-to-cluster-nodes-check-wmi/
2) https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askcore/2013/12/17/unable-to-launch-cluster-failover-manager-on-any-node-of-a-20122012r2-cluster/

I am able to the output when I ran wbemtest and "Get-WmiObject -namespace "root\mscluster" -class MSCluster_Resource" locally. When I ran the verification script from the 2nd URL, it shows "WMI query succeeded" for itself but "WMI query failed //The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HResult: 0x800706BA). for the remote node.

I then proceed to run the remediation steps below but it is still not working. Both servers seems be to working on its own but cannot connect to each other. There are a lot of event 4683 in Failoverclustering-Manager event viewer with the message "The error was 'An attempt to connect to the cluster failed due to one or more nodes not responding to WMI calls. This is usually caused by a problem with the WMI infrastructure on the node(s)'. Any suggestion?

Remove the VHD from VM (Hyper-V)

Hi All,

there was a vhd under the external drive was attached in one of our VM. after had a problem with hdd we had to unplug external drive from physical server. Then attached vhd was also detached from the VM. for this reason i can not stat replication back. Because first VM still has this vhd on settings. I would like to duplicate or start replication back for this VM. Export didnt work because attached drive is still on VM settings. Tried to fix or attach back  but failed.

this VM is so important and I want to get system image of it.  Does anyone know if i remove this attached vhd do i get any problem  with VM  ?

Or any idea how i can duplicate this server (tried server backup ,export but failed.)

I want to remove this attached drive

thanks.

Load Balancer fails - what happens then?

Hi there,

I have been in conversation with a support rep regarding setting up a second server running WebMarshal web filtering software.

They have suggested that as well as having WebMarshal running on both servers I need to install and configure Network Load Balancing on one of the two servers.

My question is straightforward..

If the server running the load balancer goes off-line for some reason will the second server come into use (keeping in mind there is now no Load Balancer)?

If this doesn't work what should I have in place?

Thanks,

Remove Cluster from Host computer

Hi Guys,

Hope someone can answer this.

I have a cluster of servers setup for VDI.

To this cluster I added a new server (Maybe this is really just a server Group than Cluster), that not really part of the cluster but pickup cluster information like Remote Desktop Services, hyper-v, ETC.

I want to remove this new server from the cluster (Server) group. The only option I can see it do this is from the New server right clicking on one of the cluster server and selecting "Remove This Server and Remote Servers in This Cluster". I assume this just remove the server from the cluster (Server GRoup) but does not actually affect the cluster. EG, I will not loose my VDI cluster.

Please note I cannot connect to the cluster servers and remove the new server as it does not show up under All Servers. I have search the internet for answer but cannot find the right answer.

Can someone confirm that I can "Remove This Server and Remote Servers in This Cluster" without breaking the Cluster?

Thanks

Craig

Preventing Failover windows 2008

We have a Microsoft 2008 cluster of 2 nodes (Windows 2008 OS).  The software installed on is not cluster able.  We wanted the cluster option for maintenance purpose and availability.  We would like to set to up so that if there is a failure it does not failover.  The failover should be done manualy by my team. Can you advise on how I can do this, please.

Cluster crash when introducing new node in S2D cluster

$

Hi guys,

Now this is the second time i have tried this… our 5 node S2D hyper v cluster have been running without a hickup for over a year now. But this changed when we introduced the new node.

All the nodes are identical. samt patch level (new ish) same firmwares. I join the node into the cluster. and right away i notice that all storage related cmdlets tages several minutes and browsing the clusterstorage shares are slow.

i notice that all storage jobs (add physicaldisk) exits with exception status. and within 30 minutes the node owning the cluster, restarts its cluster service which offline the storagepool and all vm's dies.

im at a loss. i have done several s2d clusters and have never seen this. and everything is looking good prior to joining the new cluster node

Cluster Service Will Not Start, Hyper-V 2016

$

After installing the Failover Cluster feature on two Hyper-V 2016 servers, I was able to run the Cluster Validation Tests a couple  times to see what I was missing.

Once I addressed the components that were missing (updates didn't match the first time, direct connection to establish heartbeat connection was missing the 2nd time), I thought I was ready to go.

I went to run the Validation Tests one last time only to see that the Cluster Service was disabled on both of my planned nodes.

When I attempt to start the Cluster Service manually on either node, the service fails to start with this error (from system log):

The Cluster Service service terminated with the following service-specific error:
"The system cannot find the file specified."

I can run the clean-up command but it does not change anything.

When I try to generate a log by using Get-ClusterLog in Powershell I get this error:

"Failover Clustering doesn't appear to be installed on node 'Node1'"

The cluster feature still shows as installed on both nodes and the check box is also greyed out so it can't be unchecked.

I cannot run any other commands I've found on the internet because the Cluster Service isn't running.

Most of the solutions I find on the internet don't seem to apply to me because I never actually created a cluster.

Anyone want to be a good friend and take a crack at this?

My goal was to setup these nodes so I could run highly available virtual machines.

E: I don't want to reinstall the servers because many people who have had a similar issue ran into the exact issue after reinstalling the servers. This person went so far as to install a new domain and reinstall the servers only to get the same error.

SET switch on 1GB adapters maxing core 0

I have a brand new 2016 cluster sitting on 2x DL360 G10 nodes.

2x cpu's of 8 cores each (so 16 cores\32 logical processors)

I've joined all 4x 1GB NICS into the SET Switch.

Created vNIC for LM, Cluster and Management (no SMB, as its direct SAS)

I created a SET switch but whenever i live migrate VM's around, Core 0 maxes out which means i get around 1.6GBit out of the NIC's  (is showing as 4GBit)

I understand VMQ is a big no no for 1GB (i'm used to working on 10Gbit)

I set RSS to move away from core 0, but still does the same.

Set-NetadapterRSS -Name OB1 -BaseProcessorNumber 2 -NumaNode 0
Set-NetadapterRSS -Name OB2 -BaseProcessorNumber 8 -NumaNode 0
Set-NetadapterRSS -Name OB3 -BaseProcessorNumber 2 -NumaNode 1
Set-NetadapterRSS -Name OB4 -BaseProcessorNumber 8 -NumaNode 1

What am i missing?  What have i done wrong?

Thanks

Cluster problems

Hi.

i have hypev - v cluster (2 nodes) in Windows Server 2019 (with last updates).

Trying to create VM in this cluster, with fist VM everything ok, but next added VM shows as "non clustered" in Hypev V (adding vm in failover cluster manager). Every next added VM makes previous added VM clustered while it remains non clustered.

Then i simulate node1 stop (stopping cluster service in services manager), VM's successfully moves to NODE2. In Hyper V Node2 lots of VMS Non clustered.

Have anyone meet problem like that?

If mix of OS editions and versions are running in VMs and hosted in multi nodes cluster. How to license Windows OS.

Scenario: if a 3 node cluster running total 12 Virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise,Windows Server 2012 Standard and Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition and DRS is active without any rule specification. It is virtualized with Vmware technologies.

Unable to migrate from new HyperV 2016 host in failover cluster error 21502 and 1069

I have a two node HyperV 2016 Failover Cluster. Both hosts are Dell PowerEdge R610s. I just added another host (Dell PE R620). The existing hosts have Xeon E5-2430 2.50GHz procs. The new host has Xeon E5-2690 2.90GHz procs.

I've changed my VM CPU settings by enabling "Migrate to a physical computer with a different processor version", but when I try to Live migrate I get error 21502:

The virtual machine 'Win10test' is using processor-specific features not supported on physical computer 'CLUSTER1'. To allow for migration of this virtual machine to physical computers with different processors, modify the virtual machine settings to limit the processor features used by the virtual machine.

When I Quick migrate it moves to one of the existing hosts, but fails with error 1069:

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Win10test' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'Win10test' failed. The error code was '0xc0370029' ('Cannot restore this virtual machine to the saved state because of hypervisor incompatibility. Delete the saved state data and then try to start the virtual machine.').

ISCSI export on CSV

Hi.

I would appreciate it if you understand the inexperienced English... :D

I want to use S2D as network block storage. because I configure S2D storage and use storage in ISCSI format on other types of hypervisors (KVM, vSphere, etc.).

How do I export a CSV configured through Windows Server S2D to an ISCSI target?

When I try to add the ISCSI target server role in the Failover Manager with all of the disks in the S2D cluster, the disk is missing.

I'm waiting for your answers.
